On February 3rd, a Bloomington tradition comes back for us to enjoy; it’s the 20th anniversary of the Week of Chocolate! As a sweet-tooth, it doesn’t take much persuasion for me to indulge in a nice chocolate treat. Having a week to celebrate this wonderful dessert is just another excuse for me to buy every chocolate item in sight.
In addition to tempting our taste buds, the Week of Chocolate also includes an array of events around town, many of which are free to attend. There will be a Mardi Gras art display that goes along with this year’s theme, a women’s pampering event, and a band performing at the Player’s Pub.
To celebrate this sweet week and the coming of Valentine’s Day, let’s take our taste buds on a tour by exploring some decadent chocolate desserts from around the world.
- Chocolate Malva Pudding, South Africa
Malva pudding is a popular South African dessert that was brought over from the Dutch. It is made with apricot jam and has a spongy texture. While traditional malva pudding is not made with chocolate, many sweet-tooths decided to put a twist on the recipe, resulting a in a chocolatey, melt-in-your-mouth dessert.
- Kladdkaka, Sweden
Kladdkaka literally means ‘sticky cake’. This chocolate confection’s trademark is its gooey middle. Many people say kladdkaka is much like a traditional brownie, however, the cake has a softer texture.
- Chocolate Barfi, India
Barfi, also known as Indian fudge, is a dessert made from condensed milk and sugar. Its name derives from the Persian word meaning ‘snow’ because these sweet cubes are white in their traditional form. Some types of barfi include chocolate or nuts.
This chocolate sweet was inspired by the candidacy of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, a military figure in Brazil. These dessert balls consist of condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter, and are rolled in chocolate sprinkles. Brigadeiros are Brazil’s simple gift to chocolate lovers; you can make these in the microwave!
- Chocolate Tres Leches Cake, Mexico
The origin of this sweet delight is said to come from the back of a condensed milk can. The company printed the recipe on their cans to boost their amount of sales. Tres leches literally translates to ‘three milks’. This is fitting because the recipe calls for three types of milk: condensed milk, evaporated milk, and cream. Putting a chocolate spin on this moist cake makes for a sublime, mouth-watering experience!
