Tips for Professional Dress

Interviews, career fairs, or professional presentations are three things that almost all IU students will experience. Most of us come to college and do not have a lot of professional clothing and do not even realize how much we will need it, especially as we get older and start interviewing for jobs or education beyond undergrad. Here are BLANK tips for professional dress to make your big interview or presentation day a little less scary.

  1. Suit

Most job interviews or career fairs involve wearing business professional, so a black, gray, or navy suit usually works well. You can get a suit at many places, for many prices, so you don’t have to worry about it being too expensive. Places like Macy’s, Target, Kohls, etc. offer a decent array of suits to pick from. When purchasing a new blazer or professional clothing item, I like to think of it as an investment in my future, because it is, and that makes spending a little extra on it not seem as bad.

  1. Shoes

Shoes are as important as the suit. They should be closed-toe, neutral in color, and match well with your clothing of choice. For those who may be wearing heels, make sure you feel comfortable in them and can walk easily, especially if you are attending a career fair. Also, if you should be wearing socks with your shoes, make sure they match or coordinate with your suit or shoes.

  1. Accessories/Tie

Accessories are fine to wear as long as they aren’t too flashy. Keeping it simple is always a safe way to go. Ties are a necessity for boys, so if you don’t know how to tie a tie yet, that is the first step. I still know so many people who don’t know how, so at least find a friend who can you help. Going along with ties, simple colors and patterns that match your suit are the best way to go, and can really tie together the whole professional look.

  1. Hair

When going to an interview or giving a big presentation, your hair should be styled some way that keeps it out of your face. This is key because obviously your classmates or the interviewer can see you, but also you are less likely to play with it. Beyond that, you can really go with any hairstyle that you like and feel comfortable with.

  1. Smile

Professional dress isn’t complete without a smile. This may sound a little cheesy, but smiling and having a pleasant look on your face is super important. It shows you are confident, excited, etc. for the interview, to speak to the class/interviewer, or just a new opportunity in general!

Interviews, career fairs, or presenting in front of your peers for big presentations can be a little intimidating, especially when it is the first time. Knowing what to wear and being comfortable in more professional clothing will help make the process a little more familiar.
