McKinney Fountain at the Jacobs School Of Music

Indiana University is a wonderful campus with plenty to do and see. If you are a prospective student, you are encouraged to explore the university to get a taste of what it would be like to attend IU. Here is a list of things to do around campus to help you get started.

  1. Sign up for a tour.

What better way to explore a new place than getting a tour from a knowledgeable student? Before arriving on campus, sign up for a tour through IU Admissions. On the day of your visit, you will meet the tour guide at the Admissions Welcome Center next to the Indiana Memorial Union. They will give you more insight about IU’s campus and everything the university offers its students.

While you’re at it, you should go to an open house at Teter Residence Hall. Here, you’ll be able to see a dorm room and the many amenities offered to students. Student guides will be able to answer any questions you may have about living on campus.

Campus tour walks through IU

  1. Walk through the Old Crescent.

The Old Crescent is IU’s oldest part of campus. The brick paths lined with trees and school buildings give off a sense of age and prestige. It’s a beautiful area, especially during the fall. While you’re there, snap a picture next to the Sample Gates!

  1. Explore downtown Bloomington.

The city of Bloomington and the university are very well integrated; step one foot off the western part of campus and you’ll find yourself surrounded by restaurants and shops. Go a bit farther and you’ll run into the B-Line, one of the city’s many multipurpose trails. Grab lunch downtown, walk around, and get a feel for the friendly community.

  1. Schedule a meeting with one of IU’s 12 schools.

If you have an idea of a major you’d like to pursue, schedule a time to visit that specific school. Most of the schools offer their own information sessions, so you can hear about the specific programs you’re interested in. This is a great way to have your questions answered by students and staff members.

  1. Discover the southeast neighborhood.

Jacobs School of Music is positioned in the southeast part of campus. The music practice building, Musical Arts Center, and other buildings are scattered around this area just north of 3rd Street. If you get a chance, walk through this part of campus and listen for students singing or practicing their instruments. You may be able to hear a couple of beautiful chords as you stroll along the paths.

  1. Drive by the stadium.

Athletics are a huge part of IU, and the stadiums and halls flaunt that. Drive down 17th Street and you’ll get a glimpse of Memorial Stadium, home of the football team; Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, where the basketball teams play; and Wilkinson Hall, home to the volleyball and wrestling team. If you happen to be in town on a game day, perhaps stay to watch!

  1. Stop by Luddy Hall.Luddy Hall, School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering

Luddy Hall, home to the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, is one of the newest additions to campus. Its modern architecture contrasts the buildings you’ll see on the Old Crescent; this shows that IU is not only a school with tradition, but also one of innovation.

  1. Enjoy Chocolate Moose.

The best way to end your visit at IU is with Chocolate Moose ice cream. This is a local favorite and will soon be yours, too. They have a downtown location as well as spots in multiple cafes around campus and inside the Indiana Memorial Union. With plenty of flavors and vegan options to choose from, you’ll most definitely find one to enjoy.

We are excited for you to come visit IU soon and hope that your time here will help you see that IU can be your home. Enjoy your visit!
