Home Away From Home

Four years ago, when I was a senior in high school, Indiana University was at the bottom of my list. I didn't want to apply nor did I want to visit the campus. Being from a city only an hour away from Bloomington, IN, I was scared that I would be going to a college that would be full of my high school classmates. I didn't want to relive high school for another four years! However, one day on a whim, I decided to apply just to see if I would get in. About a month later, my acceptance letter came in the mail. A month after that I decided to become an Indiana University Hoosier.

I still to this day have no idea why I decided to commit to IU, but I have not regretted it ever since. My freshman year I was blessed to have a potluck roommate who is still my roommate and one of my best friends today. I gained friends in those first few years on campus that I know I will have for a lifetime. In addition, I found my passion in art and for learning, and I am proud to say that I am ending my undergraduate career with Dean's List honors for the last four consecutive semesters. Not only did I find myself socially but also academically, and I could not have done it without the amazing environment the university offers in this small city nestled in the hills of southern Indiana.

Bloomington has become my home. It turned out to be the complete opposite of what I thought it would be. It wasn't like high school. Instead, it was a haven for me to learn and grow in those years where you need nurturing most. Indiana University was enough like home to make me feel at ease, and enough not like home to make me feel like I was experiencing a real college lifestyle. I have enjoyed the last four years here so much that I am continuing graduate school here next fall! A part of me knows that one day I will have to leave Bloomington and Indiana University behind, but it will always be that special place for me where I became an adult and who I will be for the rest of my life.
