The great thing about IU is that you have the opportunity to make any event or idea happen here as long as you take the time to plan it. I would call myself an activist and Bloomington is the perfect place to share your love of activism. For the past few months I've been planning an event sponsored by the Women's Student Association called SlutWalk Bloomington.
If you haven't heard of SlutWalk before it first began a year ago when a Toronto police officer said, "Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized." This created a huge effect around the US & the world. Marches began to educate & support that women and men no matter what they wear are not at fault for sexual assault or rape. What you wear does not give someone the invitation to violate you. SlutWalk is about expressing our unity, fighting to shed the stereotypes and myths of sexual assault and supporting a better understanding of why sexual assault happens and putting the blame where it belongs: on those who perpetrate it.
SlutWalk is a chance for everyone to come out in what you feel comfortable in wearing (jeans, skirt, dress, sweats, etc). We will be meeting in Dunn Meadow at 7:30 then marching down Kirkwood Avenue around the downtown square then back towards the sample gates. There will be tables from different student organizations, speakers and sign making!
