Six Stress Busters

This week has been CRAZY busy. Sometimes I start to feel overwhelmed by all of the projects, tests, papers, etc., but then I remember that I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing. It's really cool once you get to start taking classes that are major-specific, for example the broadcasting one I'm in now, because that's when it all starts to click and you can begin to see how your college education will extend into the real world and job force.

When things get stressful at school, I have a few (guilty) indulgences that keep me sane throughout the week. Here's what's been keeping me happy even when the going gets tough:

1. Chocolate chip and walnut cookies from Sugar & Spice at the IMU

I get AT LEAST one of these cookies a week. I often spend breaks between classes at the IMU, so I always have an excuse to stop by Sugar & Spice and get one! (Their other stuff is good too...cupcakes, cookies, muffins, cake...just sayin'.)

2. The Bachelor on ABC

Do I kill brain cells watching this TV show? Probably. But it is the best form of cheap entertainment for me and I have (sadly) gotten hooked on the current season. I don't even like Ben that much!?! I swore I wouldn't even be interested in who he decides to stay with. But on any given Monday night, you better believe I've been tuning in, and having this show to look forward to has been a saving grace amid all the studying.

3. Lennie's pizza!

I didn't discover Lennie's until this year actually, even though it was right across the street from my freshman dorm (Teter). It's on 10th Street and just a short walk from my apartment now, too. Anyway, I've fallen in love with their pizza. The best part is getting one on a weekend and then having a few slices leftover that I can heat up for dinner throughout the week. Makes it really convenient when I don't have a lot of extra time on my hands to prepare meals!

4. The IU basketball season amazing. Let's be honest. And every day that they have a game I have an excuse to wear my favorite IU hoody around campus and cheer on the Hoosiers. Even better, when they win, (which keeps happening this year!) I have an excuse to celebrate after. I can only imagine when March rolls around the madness that will ensue...

5. Running around town

My morning runs have become a really good part of my day. I like to jog into the neighborhoods surrounding campus, and while I don't run super far (about 4 miles usually) it is a great break from the campus bustle and I enjoy the familiarity of the town. Plus, the sun is coming up earlier so I even get a little sunshine in when it's not snowing or cloudy. Running is really a lifesaver when I'm stressed with school.

6. Friends

...because there are bigger things to life at IU than the courses and homework. Sometimes it's going to be hard to remember that, but cutting an assignment short for the day and taking a break with your friends is going to help you more in the long run. For some people, this won't be a problem, but for me, when I get stressed I tend to do a poor job at balancing social time and school work. It's important to remember not to take life so seriously that you forget to enjoy every moment you're here with the people that keep you going while you can.

That's all from me today! But how about you...

What do you do to relieve stress when things get crazy at school or in general?

Rachel HartogJournalism Major, Class of 2014, Georgetown, IN

I am a journalism major and business minor and plan to graduate in May 2014. Some of my best experiences in life have been because of IU, including studying abroad, meeting great people, and having an awesome internship

After I graduate, I hope to get into the broadcast journalism field, either traveling as a field reporter or getting to cover local events. I'm still exploring what specific area interests me but am open to just about anything!

I am looking forward to sharing all of my experience and everything that makes IU such a great place to be on this blog!
