Green Up Your Move In: Eco-Friendly Tips for Your First Year at IU

Move in day is steadily approaching! Are you looking to save a little green and help the planet while paying for textbooks, dorm decor, and the like this fall? Here are my tips to make preparations for move in and Welcome Week even greener and simpler than you could have imagined!

Tip 1: Buying in bulk is usually cheaper than buying individual-sized portions. Make your own on-the-go portions by doling out snacks into ziploc bags or tupperware, both of which you can reuse. Get snacks ready to go at the beginning of each day or before you go to bed at night.

Tip 2: Instead of purchasing plastic silverware, grab a couple of sturdy spoons and forks that you can rewash. The same goes for cups, plates, bowls, and etc.

Tip 3: Pick cloth dish towels for cleaning. If you have to use paper, remember to recycle it.

Tip 4: Keep bins or folders on hand in order to separate papers to keep, papers to turn in, and papers to toss. Recyle the ones you were planning on tossing; it will keep your desk organized and uncluttered.

Tip 5: Want to cheer up your study area? Invest in a small indoor plant; caring for it will help you relax and give the room a warm touch. I am a fan of bamboo, indoor herbs, or even a miniature cactus.

Tip 6: During Welcome Week, ask Welcome Week leaders and dormmates about recycling in your IU dorm; a lot of places have recycling in common areas or at the food courts. Pick a day of the week to sort your recyclables and put them into their proper recepticles.

Tip 7: Check out antique shops, secondhand stores, and garage sales for unique dorm decor at a fraction of the price.

Tip 8: Bring a few reusable bags to school; use them for grocery shopping, toting around projects or lunch, or even just storage in the room. Reusable bags can be especially handy for move in when packing odd-shaped or delicate objects not meant for suitcases.

Tip 9: Get to know some upperclassmen in your major; they may have textbooks from classes that you need to take and may be able to offer them to you for less!

Tip 10: Welcome Week (and many other weeks of the year) is probably going to be HOT! Bring two resuable water bottles to school-- one to use at home and one to keep in your backpack for on-the-go activities and classes!

Stay tuned for more tips!
