You may or may not have heard that last Thursday, the IU Auditorium hosted the Shaolin Warriors. But who are the Shaolin Warriors? Well, they are a group of martial artists from China who travel the world preforming a show of amazing tricks and spectacular mastery of skills in order to bring this iconic part of Chinese culture to others. Quite honestly, for a martial arts nerd like me, it was a feast for the eyes. (I have practiced the martial arts of Tae Kwon Do for more than six years, achieving the rank of red-black belt, or temp, as my IU Tae Kwon Do compatriots call it.)
Before the fun even began, a few of the performers hung around, introduced themselves; answered questions about themselves, the show, their craft; and of course, took pictures with people. Then, during the show, they took you on a journey through the eyes of a child going through training to become a skillful warrior. This journey was filled with cool kicks and other moves, some acrobatic airtime, and skillful manipulation of eighteen traditional weapons.
