Ever since I was a child, I have been interested in English. I would sit for hours and write stories and dream of being an author. In high school I did the International Baccalaureate Programme and concentrated in English, History, and Visual Arts. As an English major in college, my interests have changed slightly. I am now concentrating in Public and Professional Writing, and will be attending graduate school for an M.A. in advertising. Learning advertising strategies, design layouts, and the psychological impacts of ads genuinely excites me. There have been many instances when I have been eager to do projects about programming on television networks or the impacts of social media. The reason for this change in interests lies in the club that I was involved with in both high school and college, DECA (Delta Epsilon Chi).
DECA is a marketing-focused club that does various case competitions throughout the year. I joined DECA on a whim as a senior in high school, and learned that I thoroughly enjoyed creating advertising campaigns for companies. I got to combine my love for creative writing and visual arts in a single career. As a freshman at Indiana University, I joined the Kelley School of Business DECA club and have since taken on a leadership position within the club. As the Philanthropy Chairperson this year, I am in charge of organizing and marketing various events such as making cards for sick people at IU Health, assisting in Family Fit nights at Twin Lakes Rec Center, and volunteering at Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Joining the club has allowed me to give back to Bloomington, practice business and communication skills I will need in my future job, and to make friends. I met one of my best friends though joining KSB DECA. If you're interested in marketing or accounting, I highly suggest joining the club. But no matter what you're interested in, IU has a club for you. Joining clubs is a great way to make friends and get involved. Most of the time clubs have free food too!
