The Reality of the Sophomore Slump

Getting back to campus this past August was going to be great. Finally getting out of that lowest-on-the-totem-pole-freshman category! Now we know how to get anywhere campus, we can balance school work and have a social life, and we're out of the dorms - yay for freedom! But why does this all not feel as exciting as freshman year? Reality: you've been hit by the sophomore slump.

What's that, you ask? Typically, sophomore college students feel bogged down in ways such as:

"Yay getting into my major classes, except wait they're kind of hard",

"When was the last time I've seen my friends or old roommate? Where's that social life I used to have",

"I have to pay rent each month, and buy groceries, and cook food?",

or "Wait, I should start internships, like, now?"

Yikes, breathe. These are common feelings that most students have. The newness of college has worn off, but that doesn't mean it still can't be fun!

A few tips to keep you on track:

1. Get enough sleep, I promise this is important.

2. Make connections in your classes to help with the work and maybe even make a new friend.

3. Make an effort to see your friends a few times per week. It can be hard not living right down the hall, but the effort is what proves a true friendship.

4. Yeah, it's definitely time to start looking into possible internships. Begin by going to career services and they'll help you. It's not as scary as it sounds and the earlier you start, the more opportunities there are.

You've got this, fellow student. You're becoming a responsible adult and these feats will make you better prepared for the real world after college. Best of Luck!

Best,

A fellow sophomore
