Throughout my life I have always been athletic. Growing up I was a gymnast turned competitive cheerleader and girls gymnastics coach in high school.
Coming to college I was FREAKING OUT about the freshman 15. I decided that I had to do something to stay in shape.
Before coming to IU I was a frequent gym-goer after I finished cheerleading, and also continued to work out at the gymnastics center where I worked. However, I was now in a whole new place, and had no rutine.
First, I discovered weight training class in HPER. I signed up for this 1 credit hour. This class is awesome. You basically get credit to go work out twice a week. I absolutely loved it! It's not what you're thinking either... There is no heavy weight lifting or bench pressing required. I just did the machines and ran on the tredmill!
Then I discovered the SRSC. I was overwhelmed with how big it was and the fact that it was always crowded. I went for the first few months because it was in walking distance of McNutt but I just got so fed up of the crowds.
That is when I started running. I had never been a runner before. The most I had to run a mile before practices and absolutely dispised it. The most I had run had been 2.5 miles and I'm pretty sure I was forced. Thinking back, I have no idea what inspired me to start running around campus, but I am so glad I did! It is a great alternative to going to the gym with a million people (although, sometimes the sidewalks can be very full). Running around campus is a fun alternative to going to the gym. You get to see parts of campus you don't normally walk by on your way to class and you can make your routes exciting.
After taking up running I decided I needed a goal. I signed up for some 5Ks like Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and the JB5K which are at Indiana University that start at Memorial Stadium and they are so fun!! Then I decided I needed a new goal and signed up for the IU mini Marathon! Ever since then I cannot get enough of running and I have run 6 half marathons so far!
The reason I bring this whole story about running up is that this weekend, September 1st, I ran the Indy Women's Half Marathon and it was amazing! I suggest for anyone interested in running (or not yet) to pick it up and sign up for any race, big or small, to fight off that Freshman 15!!
