Save the Date for First Thursdays!

Aesthetics everywhere. I mean what else can you expect from the School of Art, Architecture & Design? There is spunk, food and artistic talent anywhere you spot when you attend one of the First Thursdays that this department hosts. Attending the First Thursday Festival is a great opportunity to get involved with the newest school at IU and for anyone interested in majoring in art to meet their future professors!

And did I mention it is free? Yes, every college kid's favorite word. FREE. It is open to the public because they want every person to celebrate and appreciate art for the beautiful, worldly thing it is. Contemporary art is displayed at its finest with plenty of booths open to let anyone who has creativity pour their mind into a craft/task. Also, every First Thursday is different in terms of the projects and interactive tables that it displays. It could be anything from painting, to drawing, to weaving, to simply creating. They have it all. The pictures above display two of the interactive stations they had this month. The first station was a live-model drawing area (Wonder Woman made a guest appearance for modeling this month). Taken place around Showalter Fountain, there were several easels up in hopes that people would draw what they saw. Let their perspective shine for everyone to see. The second station was set up for painting a piece to every part of the work of art in the picture on the right. The canvas was blank before the festival started, and I would say the end result was quite the masterpiece. The public did well. However, this isn't the only thing that goes on at First Thursdays. There are also live performances and other activities that go on around the plaza if you aren't wanting to necassarily make your own art. There is literature, there are games, and there are a ton of people that are interested in helping you to have a great time. Arts of all forms are welcomed with open arms at this event.

Ok, ok, I know what you are thinking now. WHEN IS IT? Well, it is the First Thursday of every month (hence the name), and I will include a schedule and a link below to the festival. It takes place around the Showalter fountain from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and you can pop in whenever between those two times. And one more thing before you leave to check out the site, if you really love the idea of First Thursdays and want to join the team, you can become a volunteer! Yes, it is possible, and I will also share that link below.

Fall 2017 dates for First Thursdays are October 5 and November 2.

About The Author
Kayla SkinnerEnglish major, class of 2020

I'm a listener, an observer, and an experiencer. I love to analyze the world and to show others my perspective through drawings, photos, and words. Art is a form of expression, of life, and it is the form I would use to describe who I truly am.

I am studying English at Indiana University with a focus in professional and public writing. I am also involved in Run Club and am a photographer for IDS Student News. I work at Friends of Art Bookshop in the Fine Arts building, and I now write blogs for! I love this school, and I love being involved in all the opportunities it has to offer students of all interests. I hope you enjoy my writings and will (hopefully) be influenced to create your own.
